Product Overview |
2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol (TMPD, CAS No. 144-19-4) is a branched organic diol widely used as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyester resins and coating materials. Its unique asymmetric structure carries one primary hydroxyl group and one secondary hydroxyl group with bulky methyl side chains, delivering strong steric hindrance to polymer chains after polymerization. It is particularly suitable for the formulation of saturated polyester resins for liquid coatings and unsaturated polyester laminating resins.
TMPD can also be used in high-solids and waterborne polyester coating systems, where its molecular structure can support low resin viscosity, good solvent solubility, and formulation flexibility. Compared with common diols such as neopentyl glycol, TMPD imparts outstanding hydrolysis resistance, chemical resistance and weatherability to finished coatings, effectively preventing film degradation under humid or corrosive environments. TMPD-based polyester systems are also used in selected industrial coatings and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) applications.

Applications |
Applications of 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol (TMPD)
2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol (TMPD, CAS 144-19-4) is a branched diol widely used as a building block in polyester resin and coating formulations. Its molecular structure makes it particularly suitable for saturated polyester resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and selected high-performance coating systems.
Polyester Resins & Liquid Coatings
TMPD is commonly used in the production of saturated polyester resins for liquid coatings. Its branched structure can support low resin viscosity, good solvent solubility, and formulation flexibility, making it suitable for industrial coating applications.
Typical application areas include:
Saturated polyester resins
Industrial liquid coatings
General metal coatings
Automotive and auto-refinish coatings
Inustrial maintenance coatings
High-Solids & Waterborne Coatings
TMPD can be used in polyester systems designed for high-solids, low-VOC, and waterborne coatings. TMPD-based polyester formulations may provide a useful balance of processability and coating performance, including resistance to chemicals, stains, humidity, and corrosion.
It is particularly suitable for formulations where low viscosity, good solvent compatibility, and stable waterborne polyester performance are required.
Unsaturated Polyester Resins
TMPD is also used as a diol component in unsaturated polyester laminating resins. These resin systems are used in composite materials and applications requiring durable resin performance.
Typical applications include:
Unsaturated polyester laminating resins
Composite materials
Fiberglass-reinforced plastics
Industrial molded products
Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastics & Composites
TMPD-based polyester systems can be used in fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) and composite applications, particularly where corrosion resistance and long-term durability are important performance considerations.
The final performance of TMPD in any resin or coating system depends on the complete formulation, monomer ratio, processing conditions, curing system, and intended end use. Customers should evaluate product suitability according to their specific formulation and application requirements.
